2009 Season Announced!

Just a reminder that the details of the 2009 season are now available. Ticket sales are very busy at the moment and all tickets will be sent out from the S&F office after the 17th October cut-off for re-subscribers. If you have not received your 2009 season brochure, please pop me an email on info@selbyandfriends.com.au and one will be sent to you straight away. You can also access all details of the season on my new look website - www.selbyandfriends.com.au. I hope you will visit there soon and let me know what you think. There are some new features on the site and a great new format.

Next year the season will focus on the piano trio with TRIOZ as my guest artists and the scope of the programs is full of variety - from Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven through Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn to Sculthorpe, Bernstein, Miriam Hyde, Cassado, Kats-Chernin and more. I'm sure you will enjoy this return to the piano trio in 2009 and I look forward to welcoming you. Melbourne audiences will by now be aware that the concert time in 2009 will return to the popular 8:00pm.

Upcoming tour with TRIOZ - One & Only

This final tour for 2008 is a very special one indeed. Here we explore three incredible works written by three fascinating people. Faure and Clarke were working at a very similar time and yet their works could not be more different. In fact, whilst Faure's trio is quite feminine in nature, Clarke's masterpiece is very muscular and a thrill to hear. The great Tchaikovsky trio set the standard for many that followed and it is a tour de force. These works were the only ones composed for this genre by their composers and thus hold a special place in their individual output.

Program

Gabriel Fauré - Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 120
Rebecca Clarke - Piano Trio (1921)
Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Piano Tro in A minor, Op. 50

Dates

Saturday 25 October - Recital Room at Oxley College, Bowral - 5:30pm
Monday 27 October- Fairfax Theatre, National Gallery, Canberra - 7:30pm

Thursday 30 October- City Recital Hall Angel Place, Sydney - 7pm

PSQ and The Nationalists

We had a marvellous tour with the Parker String Quartet. I will ventue to say that they had a terrific time in Australia and three of them headed up North directly after the tour was over to soak up some Queensland sunshine. The tour proved to elicit many interesting comments from the audience. The Dvorak Quintet was a big favourite, but the Ligeti and Barber brought on quite a flow of emails. You can see the glowing published critical reviews received on my website but here are some comments by email from audience members which are always highly valued :

That was the most fabulous concert last night - thanks a lot for that. Such a great program and the quartet were absolutely wonderful. I took along a friend who doesn't go to much classical music and she adored it, especially the Ligeti. It's great that someone's doing interesting repertoire. Sydney

We enjoyed the magnificent concert last night..the programme and playing was wonderful. Melbourne

Thank you so much for the 2 tickets to last night's (Sept. 2) concert. What a powerhouse performance! While the Ligeti was not my favourite, it certainly showcased the virtuosity of the musicians - very percussive sounds and I'm guessing it would have been a technically difficult piece to play. But the Dvorak Piano Quintet - what a dream. Bliss from first note to last. Congratulations, keep up the good work. I can't wait for the 2009 season now. Sydney

We are devoted to classical music, in fact our lives are dominated by such music. I note with consternation the trend to “modern” music and more and more of our likeminded friends complain that they (and of course us) have to endure music offensive to our ears so that we can listen to the pieces we really want to hear. The pieces I mentioned were an endurance test and it was only good manners which prevented me from leaving in the middle of the Ligety Number, given that it was ruining the delightful afterglow of the Field Quintetto. Melbourne

A Little Lunch Music - October

The last lunch time concert was a pleasure for all those attending to hear Charmian Gadd, violin and Daniel Herscovitch, piano. Our next concert will be presented by the fabulous Claire Edwardes, percussion, who will delve into the mysteries of the marimba. In fact, she has entitled the program "the mellow marimba" and composers will include Bach, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Corea, Sejourne and two world premieres by Australian composers Benjamin Thorn and Drew Crawford.

Tickets are $10 only and don't forget to bring your lunch! You can find out all details of these concerts by calling City Recital Hall on 8256 2222 or by visiting my website and going to the Lunchtime Concerts link on the Home page.

We really enjoyed last Monday's Parker Quartet concert in Canberra. The string sound was literally mellifluous. Canberra
