Time for a Holiday - Impressions of a Holiday!

With a new and quite wonderful snap in the air, it almost feels like it is time for a holiday and with this upcoming program named for the evocative work by Eugene Goossens in the first half, I guarantee you will feel carried away!

My guests are TRIOZ and with Emma-Jane only weeks away from having her second baby and Niki announcing the birth of her first baby later this year, we are celebrating not just holidays!

The program begins with Haydn's delightful and ever popular 'Gypsy Rondo' piano trio, so-named because of the final movement - an example of his acute awareness of the different cultural traditions that surrounded him as he lived and worked in Hungary. The work was one of a set dedicated to a young London widow with whom he became close friends during his visits to the important capital in the 1790s! And on to the great Eugene Goossens whose influence on the Australian musical landscape cannot be valued highly enough both as conductor and educator. But for those who do not know his compositions, this work will be like a delicious set of postcards sent from abroad, so suggestive are its five 'impressions'.

The half ends with the unusual scents and sounds of Spain and it is with great pleasure that we visit for a time with Granados. The 'cavatina' is quite dominant in the work and serves to truly place one in the sunny spheres of his homeland. And the great Mendelssohn c minor piano trio closes the program - an iconic work in the repertoire, composed at the height of the young composer's powers and exceptionally difficult and satisfying for all players.

TRIOZ has released a Live in Concert disc from our most recent tour program from 16 March, there is a Piano Recital disc, the wonderful Live Highlights disc formerly made available from last year only to subscribers for 2010 and the hard cover edition of Constanze, Mozart's Beloved !

We will be making all the CDs available for purchase at the concerts as well.

A Little Lunch Music

Our most recent lunchtime concert with TRIOZ and Schubert was so much fun - we explored the relationship between tempo and its effect on performance. We had a wonderfully large and enthusiastic audience who I hope will join us again on Friday 28th May at 12:30pm for a performance of the great Schumann Piano Quartet. My guests on this occasion will be my very dear old friends from the Australia Ensemble and Goldner String Quartet, Dimity Hall (violin), Irina Morozova (viola) and Julian Smiles (cello). Tickets are $10 and can be purchased directly through City Recital Hall online or by calling their box office on 8256 2222.
