Vivid Evocations by Trioz

Alive
June 4, 2010

Particularly interesting in the TRIOZ concert on 18 May at Angel Place was the inclusion of Eugene Goossens' Five Impressions of a Holiday, sharing an agenda with piano trios by Hyden, Granados and Mendelssohn .

Goossen's daughter Renee was among those present to hear this beguiling and provocative work in five segments. Notably vivid are the evocations of liquidity in the third part, The Water Wheel, the bells and congregational singing in the penultimate one, The Village Church.

But TRIOZ, pianist Kathryn Selby, violinist Niki Vasilakis and cellist Emma-Jane Murphy save the best for last: an impeccably responsive reading of Mendelssohn's Piano Trio No. 2 in which no nuance or juxtaposition was given short shrift and all the shifts of aural focus among the performers were adroitly managed.
