This fourth tour in Selby & Friends’ 2023 concert season celebrates three stages in life. Ms. Selby and her guest artists will introduce the works from the stage, a hallmark feature of Selby & Friends concerts. “Three Stages of Man” follows the creative stages of three beloved composers at different points in their lives: Ravel’s extraordinary Duo for Violin and Cello composed at the height of his powers in a tribute to Debussy, the universally fascinating and gorgeous Brahms Piano Trio No. 2 in C major, Op. 87, and Rachmaninov’s Trio élégiaque No. 2 in D minor, Op. 9, composed at only 20 years old, in which the composer created an elegy to the memory of a great composer with a moving recollection of his memories of Tchaikovsky.
Audiences will delight in these concert events touring to Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide, the NSW Southern Highlands and Turramurra on Sydney’s Upper North Shore between August 27th and September 4th.
Renowned for its revolving artistic ensemble, Selby & Friends’ dream team for this tour combines charisma and talent at their best. Violinist Susie Park, a Yehudi Menuhin Competition and Wieniawski Competition winner, returns to her native Australia from the USA, where she has been a member of the Grammy-nominated Eroica Trio, and of Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Two. She now holds the post of First Associate Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra. Cellist Timo-Veikko Valve, ever popular in his many concert appearances as a soloist and Principal Cellist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, enjoys a varied career on multiple continents, and has commissioned and premiered works composed especially for him. Artistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby AM, founder of Selby & Friends, now in its 17th season, is Australia’s pre-eminent chamber music pianist and a powerful entrepreneurial force on the arts scene.
