Selby & Friends is set to enthrall concert audiences again with the third tour of its 2017 subscription season. This July we present a spectacular program of piano trios mirroring the cultural and folkloric roots of composers with diverse origins from around the globe.

A gem of the Australian chamber music scene, this tour allows Selby & Friends to showcase the unique musical languages of Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin’s Ukrainian homeland; Dvořák’s beloved Bohemia; and the tonal colours of Ravel’s Basque heritage that stamp his compositions with the legendary vernacular of impressionist France.

The consistent high quality of artistry in Selby & Friends concerts marks each one as a pinnacle of the classical music season. Even the most popular works sound refreshed as exemplified by music journalist Harriet Cunningham’s remarks: “This was the real thing… virtuosity is a given (Kathryn Selby has excellent taste in friends)…” These performances will be no exception.

Joining Artistic Director and pianist Kathryn Selby AM for “Proud Folk” are two impeccable musicians, Australian virtuoso violinist Natalie Chee and cellist Julian Smiles, long-time friends of Selby who appear regularly with Selby & Friends but now for the very first time together.

Sydney-born violinist Natalie Chee returns home for these six concerts from Germany where she is Concertmaster of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra. She has built a stellar international career as concertmaster of Camerata Salzburg and guest concertmaster with many of the world’s great orchestras. Julian Smiles is one of Australia’s leading cellists and a member of the award-winning Goldner String Quartet and the Australia Ensemble @UNSW.

Pre-eminent Australian chamber music pianist Kathryn Selby AM is the recipient of numerous international performance awards as well as a driving entrepreneurial force on the chamber music scene.

As Founder and Artistic Director, Kathryn Selby has created in Selby & Friends a unique performance concept – chamber music concerts in intimate, casual settings featuring a rotating cast of acclaimed guest musicians from both home and abroad. A hallmark of the series is the communication by the artists from the stage about their personal experiences as musicians.

These highly anticipated “Proud Folk” performances confirm Melbourne reviewer Clive O’Connell’s prediction for the 2017 Selby & Friends season: “What you will get across every night is excellent chamber music-making…” A truly world class concert!
