Kathryn Selby

Who is Kathryn Selby AM?
Kathryn Selby AM is Australia’s pre-eminent award-winning chamber music pianist, and the Artistic Director and founder of the popular nationally touring Selby & Friends concert series. A recipient of both the prestigious Churchill and Australia Council Fellowships, Miss Selby was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2013 Australia Day Honours.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Do you mean what would I do differently in my own sphere or as a different line of work? If the latter, I always wanted to work with animals! But then I did start a law degree many years ago. I think probably I would teach to be honest.

Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by people who actively try and make a difference in the world – those who help people in danger, distress, ill health. I cannot imagine how terrifying it must be to put yourself in harm’s way and to do this to assist others have a better life is extraordinary.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I have often pondered that question and to that end support heaps of charities. Personally I am not sure – give unwanted animals a home, provide shelter to those in need perhaps.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
That is too hard to answer – I am not a very good traveler but I love northern Australia and exploring my own country as much as I love France and Italy and the US and UK. Mostly I love travelling with my family so anywhere they go is fine with me!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
In Sydney I would take them to the harbour and hope for a beautiful Sydney day which we are lucky enough to have very often! Otherwise, the Opera House, the beach (any beach) – the great Australian outdoors!

What are you currently reading?
A biography about Beethoven by Thayer for research!

What are you currently listening to?
Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony followed by the Cello Quintet.

Happiness is?
Not found in the expectations of others.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully a great deal of music, love and laughter with my beautiful family and sharing with my friends.
